I'd say, this plug-in has its right to exist, but for what it does it is heavily overpriced IMHO. Something like this can be easily done with ReaGate or ReaFIR. carefully listen to the example where a live audience can be heard in the background, you still hear this noise while he is speaking, below his speech when the plug is enabled. My usual approach there was to record or render several passes with different settings and use natural crossfades between sections of song or programme, possibly blending with unprocessed signal.Īs I see it, the plug presented in the video doesn't do really something special (as it is claimed). This is IME most demanding and there could be really different results among used tools and techniques. It is different situation with one recorded instrument, where artifacts can be successfully masked by other mix elements, and complete dynamic program material, where it is not possible to completely sacrifice low level resolution. It is mainly matter of material and type of damage. Generally, it is for sure possible to use built-in effects, which came with Reaper. XComp unfortunately doesn't have normal (downward) expander mode, which will be very nice for that kind of treatment, with band ratio bellow 1, XComp became upward expander. It will be interesting for comparison to for instance RX or Oxford Restoration Suite.ĪFAIK, ReaFir as a compressor or gate have fixed timing constants, what i meant is kind of program dependence (like different behavior for transients) and variable soft knee, which helps to achieve more natural results. If it works as advertised it's a pretty amazing package for $99 P.S.: Just for curiosity, looking at KVR, i've found some cheap VST. Former one is quite versatile and has also other built-in sweetening modules.

Waves plugin (i didn't tested it) for 200USD or WaveArts dialog for 250USD are probably chapest serious dialog oriented choices, if is it working for you.

I'm not aware of anything free for that purpose. is pretty good value in comparison to this while providing great toolset for general restoration. Cedar tool was typically several thousands of GBP.

So basically these tools are much quicker to setup (sometimes there is only single control, especially on dedicated dialog cleaners) and usually leads to cleaners results.īad news is, tools were always dedicated to professional post, restoration or broadcast business and not project studios. as opposed to general broadband noise-reduction tools. Some tools are optimized for dialog processing, so there are some built-in profiles and optimizations for typical frequency content and dynamic nature of human voice.

Then there is usually also some frequency smoothing of that threshold curve, which can prevent another type of reduction artifacts.

and to be as natural as possible without jumps in noise level and signal cutout artifacts. Important thing in case of dynamic processing is also timing behavior. ReaFir is quite general FIR processor, which can work as multiband gate or subtract captured noise profile from signal.īoth will work to certain basic degree, but specialized tools for noise treatment have for instance floating threshold detection, so it automatically changes in time and adapts to incoming signal.

I don't think, you'll find mentioned ReaFir or ReaGate as effective in bg noise removal as commercial tools from Cedar, Izotope, Sonnox or Algorithmix.
